I am so excited that Spring is finally here and that the weather is getting warmer.  I am looking forward to taking more headshot sessions outdoors.  I absolutely love the diversity of backgrounds that you can get for your professional headshots outdoors.  This featured session is of a co-worker and friend of mine.  Nathalie is a skating coach and an aspiring young actress.  She came to me to get her headshots done.    We scheduled a date and took them outside the skating rink and captured a variety of looks.  Here are some of my favorites from her headshot session.

I recently had a chance to work with this beautiful young actor on her headshots.  As usual, I  strictly used natural light on this session.  It was a sunny day and the lighting was there so there was no need for me to set up strobes or continuous lighting when I had such beautiful available light in my studio.  I always prefer using natural lighting when it is available because it is the most flattering and the best representation of yourself when you step into an audition room.  Actor headshots should not be highly glamourous.  You are an actor not a model.  Your headshot needs to convey who you are  so that casting directors know what you really look like in person.  Therefore you will want photos that are perfectly lit with minimal shadows and distractions, especially if you are a female.  That is why you must make sure that your photographer understands lighting and how it works. From small business owners to corporate executives, singles to stay-at-home mom’s, more and more clients are requesting a non-traditional headshot session sometimes referred to as the “E- portrait session” or “environmental portrait session”.  What is an E-portrait session?  It is a variety of individual portraits and/or non-traditional headshots for you to use, primarily online either for your business or personal websites, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and sometimes online dating sites.  In today’s digital world, it just makes sense to have professional, clean, classy photos that represent who you are.

Recently, I did this type of shoot for Diana.  Diana is a registered dietician/nutritionist wellness coach and yoga instructor in NYC working with people to help them live more healthier lifestyles.  She currently has her own facebook page which has plenty of nutrition wellness ideas and tips on how to stay healthy but is looking to create her own website soon.

She contacted me because she was looking for a variety of great photos: professional shots for her website,  Facebook and Linkedin pages and a few environment specific shots.  In our consultation we tossed around a few ideas until Diana decided that she wanted to  capture some casual  headshots at one of her favorite coffee shops in Astoria, NY and then some at Astoria Park in Queens, NY.    Knowing that Diana loved doing Yoga and was an instructor, I suggested that she bring a change of outfit so that we could capture some yoga poses.

If you are interested in this type of shoot and would like some non-traditional headshots for your business, website, online dating or social media web sites, just contact me!  I would love to hear from you! info@irenebellaphotography.com

I service NYC, Long Island and some parts of New York and New Jersey.  We can either meet at agreed outdoor/indoor location such as a park, library, museum, your office, etc.

Here are just a couple of my favorites from our shoot:

If you are a Long Island actor, having a great headshot  is a must since it is your calling card to get work.  I love shooting headshots.  I enjoy directing and coaching my subjects and working with them to create the best images possible.  I enjoy meeting people and hearing about how they got into acting and I enjoy the challenge of getting the “look”.  Nailing a great headshot is hard work.  It certainly is not easy and can require many clicks of the shutter before we get the right look.  Here are some recent headshots that I took for an aspiring young  Long Island, NY actor.  Headshots are NOT just for actors anymore.  With social media and on-line presence playing such a huge factor in our lives, everyone needs a good headshot for their on-line and social media profiles.  Isn’t it time that you book your shoot today?

As you may already know by now, I love taking headshots for actors, dancers and musicians.  There is so much incredible talent out there and it is always great to be able to meet such talented people and to work with them on their headshots.  Some of the actors that I meet are fairly new to the business while others are veterans that are simply looking to update their headshots.  If you are an actor, it is always a good idea to get updated headshots every two years, especially if your appearance has changed, i.e., you have a new hairstyle, changed the color of your hair, you got braces, you grew a beard, or any other change in facial appearance.  Your headshot should look like you normally look like every day of the  year.  When  you are called in to an audition, casting directors would like you to look like the headshot  you submitted.  Hence it is important that you do not appear over glammed up for your headshot photo session.  Although hair and make-up is important for your photo shoot, and you may decide to get  your hair and/or make-up done by a professional, you will still want to be able to easily replicate the look of  your headshot on the day of your audition.  So if you normally wear straight hair for your auditions, you will want to keep your hair straight for your headshot session.   So, do you need to hire a hair and/or make-up artist?   I think it is always a good idea especially for women, especially when it comes to make-up.  I know that I myself,  always find that when somebody else does my hair and make-up it always comes out a bit more “polished”.    I normally wear my hair straight and I love to treat myself to a professional blowing out my hair or flattening it out.  And even though i know how to put make-up on, I always prefer a professional to do it especially for pictures.     Here are some photos from a recent actor’s headshot session.  This young lady contacted me a couple of weeks ago for a headshot session.  She is an aspiring young actress who is really excited about pursuing her dream of being an actress.  Since she told me that she normally does not wear any make-up, we kept her make-up looking fairly natural so that she still looks like herself when she goes for auditions.
